В тексте мы обсуждаем различные аспекты исследований мозга, в которых изучалась природа латерализации. Здесь я хочу подчеркнуть важность учета степени сложности, связанной с исследованиями работы мозга вообще и с изучением его асимметрии в частности. Одна из методологических сложностей заключается в трудности интерпретации данных функциональной магнитно-резонансной томографии (фМРТ) и позитронной эмиссионной томографии (ПЭТ). Технические особенности оценки степени активации и статистические методы, используемые для оценки разницы между двумя полушариями, могут привести к абсолютно разным выводам из одних и тех же данных. Дэвидсон и его коллеги попытались справиться с этой трудностью и использовали весьма осмотрительный подход к своим данным. В целом при оценке данных по латерализации функций в мозге мы должны придерживаться разумного консерватизма.

Еще один аспект, который следует учитывать, – то, что в пределах одного полушария существуют важные области, сильно отличающиеся друг от друга в функциональном отношении, и поэтому слова о том, что в данном случае, например, «активно левое полушарие», могут иметь совершенно иной смысл, нежели тот, который мы в них вкладываем. Мы используем термины «левополушарный способ» и «правополушарный способ» для описания паттернов обработки информации, делая упор не на конкретную локализацию процесса, а на его функциональные свойства. Например, какой-то участок левой префронтальной области может активироваться одновременно с каким-то участком правой префронтальной области. Мозг функционирует как единая система, и многие области осуществляют активность, не определяемую той стороной мозга, на которой эта активность имеет место. Например, есть небольшое совпадение между областями левого полушария, отвечающими за приближение и позитивный аффект, и областями, отвечающими за речевую продукцию. Но нам не стоит полагать, что только по причине того, что мы находимся в «состоянии сближения» с объектом и у нас наблюдается левосторонний сдвиг электрической активности, одновременно активируется и речевой центр. В целом очень полезно всегда иметь в виду интеграцию как важный нейронный механизм, который позволяет нам осуществлять сложные функции. Связи, объединяющие области в пределах одного полушария, и связи, соединяющие правое и левое полушария, – ключевые элементы, которые следует иметь в виду, если мы ищем корреляции между нейрональными функциями и ментальным опытом.
