CAREERS IN SPORT MANAGEMENT

The increased growth of competitive athletics, sport participation by all segments of society, and sport-related businesses has created a need for individuals trained in sport management. Many career opportunities exist for qualified individuals in this field.

In recent years the realm of sport management has expanded to include a diversity of opportunities in a variety of settings. Employment opportunities encompass sport administration, management of sport clubs and facilities, sport and leisure social services, and sport marketing and promotion.

An increasing number of colleges and universities are offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in sport management. In 1992 the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) joint task force on sport management curriculum and accreditation developed a comprehensive set of competencies that should be included in a sport management professional preparation curriculum. The core content for undergraduate programs includes course work in the following areas: behavioral dimensions in sport (e.g., sport sociology), management and organizational skills in sport (e.g., sport management), ethics (e.g., ethics in business), marketing in sport (e.g., advertising), communication in sport (e.g., public relations), economics in sport (e.g., sport enterprise), legal aspects of sport (e.g., risk management), and governance in sport (e.g., sport administration).

Practical experience is an integral part of preparation. An internship is now commonly required; students usually work in a sport management setting for a semester, working at least 40 hours a week and accumulating at least 400 hours. This experience is supervised by a faculty-member from the undergraduate institution as well as a professional at the internship site. Students may gain additional practical experience through fieldwork (short periods of supervised work in a practical setting), by volunteering, or by working in a sport management position during summer or on a part-time basis during the school year. Practical experiences are also a good way to investigate the growing number of career opportunities in this broad field.

Individuals interested in pursuing a career in this area should understand that they will likely begin their career with employment in an entry level position, often with limited responsibilities. From this position, competent individuals can work their way through middle management and top management positions to assume increased and more broad-ranging responsibilities. Salaries in this field vary widely, ranging from $20,000 to $30,000 per year, although some salaries may be greater than $50,000 per year.
