MY FAMILY

Let me introduce myself. I am Alex Smirnoff. Alex is my first name and Smirnoff is my surname. I am twenty. I want to tell you a few words about my family. My family is large. I have got a mother, a father, a married sister, and a grandmother. There are six of us in the family. Some words about my parents. My mother is a teacher of biology. She works in a college. She likes her profession. She is a good-looking woman with brown hair. She is forty-four but she looks much younger. My father is a computer programmer. He is very experienced. He is a tall man with fair hair and grey eyes. He is forty-six. My father knows all about new radio sets and likes to repair old ones. He is also handy with many things. When he was small, he liked to take everything to pieces. My grandmother told me a story that once my father tried to "repair" their kitchen clock. He managed to put all the wheels and screws back again — but the clock did not work. They had to give it to a repairman. But that happened a long time ago. Now he can fix almost everything: a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine, a fridge and what not. My parents have been married for twenty-three years. They have much in common but they have different views on music, books, films, sports. For example, my father likes horror films and my mother likes "soap operas". My father is fond of tennis. My mother doesn't go in for sports. But my parents have always had the same opinion about me, my education and upbringing. My grandmother is a pensioner. She lives with us and helps to run the house. She is fond of knitting. My sister Helen is twenty-one. She is married and has a family of her own. She works as an accountant for a joint venture company. Her husband is a scientist. He is seven years older than my sister. They have got twins: a daughter and a son. They are so cute. I really do love them. We have got a lot of relatives. We are deeply attached to each other and we get on very well.

American Family Trends

The traditional American family consists of a husband, wife and children. Nowadays it is becoming less and less frequent. More people who are not legally married are living together. More and more children are being raised in single-parent families. Marriages are either civil or performed in the church. Marriage has a legal foundation. It means that a Registry Office has a record of it and it carries certain economic rights. When getting married both parties sign the document of marriage, that is, a marriage certificate. Young people rarely live with their parents. Usually, on graduation from high school children move out of the family home. Young people frequently rent apartments or a house. Usually two to five young people rent apartment or a house together and share other expenses.

While young people are getting married later in life, the divorce rate is increasing. Almost 50 % of all marriages in the United States now end in divorce. The cheapest way of getting a divorce is when two parties come to an agreement between themselves about the distribution of property. If there is no agreement then each hires a lawyer and the divorce will be very costly. One of the trends in American society is the increasingly high number of children being born to unmarried young people in poverty who are being raised without fathers. Two-thirds of black children are now being born in fatherless households. These children will add to the number of those in poverty and to those involved in crime.
