Так, предложения с условным придаточным предложением “If I were you” часто выражают совет.

I’d listen to him, if I were you.

Сложноподчиненные предложения с придаточным “If I had been you” и с формой сказуемого “would + perfect infinitive” в главном предложении обычно выражают сожаление или критику.

If I had been you, I would have at least considered the options. –

If you should think of anything more, please let me know.

Полумодальный глагол “be to” (форма “were to”) добавляет значение “предложение (suggestion)”, которое, благодаря употреблению were to, звучит более вежливо.

I am sure if you were to ask her, she would be able to help. –

If you would/could wait, I would go with you.

I’ll be grateful if you would phone me.

We’d be glad to take her along if she would go.

I would give ten years of my life if you would come back now.

Модальные глаголы “could” и “might” выражают значение гипотетической возможности (hypothetical possibility); глагол “could”может также выражать гипотетическую способность (hypothetical ability) совершить действие.

If looks could kill, you’d be in your grave. –

I couldn’t forgive myself if because of us you came to harm. –

If you didn’t spend all your days at the country club, you might know something. –

I could’ve understood if she had fallen for a pretty face. –

I might have met you if you had let me know about your arrival. –
